Hello my Friends,
Its been a busy week here at the Sanctuary. The weather has been warm, and the dusty season is upon us. The brief thunderstorm we had yesterday was nice but not nearly enough rain fell to suppress the dust for long, still it was nice. We have had a lot of additions and adoptions the past two weeks and sadly one passing. I think I will wait until the end for that one just because I'm not sure what to say yet, and I hate starting an update on sad news.
- Tuesday, we had an intake of 20 pigs with 6 piglets. Mamma, piglets and 2 of the boys are in the healing barn outside stalls, the rest are over at Reiner. Where their final destination will be I'm not certain. Some will possibly go to the NARN side yard, some maybe over to the potbellies, not totally sure at this point. It will be a little bit before that needs to be decided. They have to clear their health checks and all of them have to be fixed as none of them currently are. If you have time, you can go over to the HB and see them. We don't want anyone in the stalls with them just yet, but you can get a peak from the outside. Yesterday I was lucky enough to get there at feeding time which was something to watch. Momma wanted no part of it and wouldn't roll on her side, but the little ones were relentless and finally she gave in. It was madness as the piglets were climbing over each other trying to find their spot. After a couple minutes Momma had enough and tried to walk away with piglets hanging from her. She laid back down on her stomach and feeding time was over.
- As of this writing, Sylvie and Sienna goats are getting adopted. Time frame I'm not sure but the adopters came out here Wednesday and fell in love with them. Personally, I am extremely fond of these two and will miss them a lot if they leave but I do recognize they are kind of big bullies to the other goats and Victor. Still though I will miss them. When I know when they will leave I will let you know.
- Speaking of goats with attitudes, Jayme is coming back along with her partner Whitney. I guess changing scenery and yard mates did little to take the fight out of her and in the end, it was too much for the adopter. They showed up today and are over at our Reiner facility until they clear their health checks.
- Sadly, an old friend got returned......again. Let's all welcome back our favorite frisbee chaser, Freddy. He looks really good though, definitely not as chubby as last time. I know he has a very devoted fan base and I'm sure your all very excited to have him back. Shower him with love and remind him that this isn't such a bad place, and we have some really cool new trails to pee on.
- So, this is ever developing and normally I wouldn't say anything yet but because he is one of, or really THE superstar of the sanctuary I have to. Frank isn't feeling all that well. As of this writing, he is at Twin Pines getting evaluated. I am not sure when he will be returning and just in case he's there through the weekend I don't want you all to freak out when you don't see him tomorrow. He has been very lethargic over the past week and originally, we thought it could be the heat. This could be nothing and like I said I normally wouldn't say anything just yet but it's Frank and he's kind of a big thing here to all of us. I will keep you updated on his condition.
- Lastly, I think I know how to express what I'm feeling here. One of the most important things I believe we do at Pasado's is to give every animal a safe & loving place to live out the rest of their natural lives. No matter if they get adopted and returned or never get the chance to get adopted, they have a home for life. Such is the case for this lovely girl we had to say goodbye to yesterday..........Opal sheep crossed the rainbow bridge with the help of her care team yesterday. Her health has been steadily declining, and her pain and discomfort was more than we could effectively manage. We didn't come to this decision easily, she's been here for a couple years and she special to us, but it was the right decision. Opal came to us with her friends Clarence and Aqua. They lived in Turkey Castle and affectionately were known as the Turkey Sheep. When Clarence died, Opal and Aqua were moved over to Reiner to live with the sheep and goats over there. After Aqua got adopted back in November, Opal moved back to the Sanctuary and has lived in the NARN ever since. It is sad that I won't see her in the pasture anymore, but it also fills my heart that we were able to give her such a beautiful place to live out the remaining days of her life. She was loved by everyone, and will be dearly missed!
